Whites GMT metal detector with modificationsBalance

The Whites GMT is heavier at the coil when fully extended, so forearm fatigue is annoying.  I bent a scrap piece of 1/2"metal electrical conduit 45 degrees to make it parallel with the handle, drilled a hole in the long end for a D-biner. I dipped the tube in vinyl to protect the detector from damage, and make it more securely fit the handle tub after removing its plug. I attached a bottle to the D-biner, and filled it with water until the detector was perfectly balanced. Now there is no fatigue.

Spare batteries could be equally useful, and used instead of water as a counterbalance. The metal conduit could be replaced with plastic, and the extension made long enough to accommodate a spare set of eight AA batteries inside at the proper distance for perfect balance.

Ear Phone Freedom

Tired of jerking the head phones from my head each time I stooped to examine a find, and too cheap to buy a Blue Tooth transmitter, I bought a FM transmitter (2 AAA batteries) and headphone (2 AAA batteries) set from Ross for $12. Subsequenly, the same set became available from Harbor Freight for $7.  I velcroed the transmitter to the front of the detector.

The system works great. Just remember to enable the headphones before the transmitter, and the detector before the transmitter.  That avoids having to reset the headphones after it latches onto a FM radio station, because it received no signal from the FM transmitter.
