Bill Holmes - Activities - Hiking and Biking - Klamath Falls to Coeur d'Alene

After leaving the Petroglyphs, I drove to Klamath Falls, Oregon (43.9 mi – about 1 hour 14 mins),

and around the south end of Klamath Lake via Lakeshore Drive to the WorldMark Running-Y facility in the upper left hand corner of this map.

This was the lodge the next morning on 5/21/10,

which motivated me to leave for Klamath Falls to find chains I could return in Lancaster should I not need them.

On 5/22/10, I left for Portland, OR to buy things free of sales tax (US-97 N/The Dalles-California Hwy, OR-58 W and I-5 N
280 mi; 5 hours 15 mins).

I took Highway 97 north and turned left on Highway 58 past the Odell Lake exit on the way to Eugene, OR.

Nearing top of pass on 58.

Then on to Portland, where I saved about $400 in CA sales taxes. Then to Goldendale, WA for an Internet date northeast of town (123 mi – about 2 hours 24 mins).

While looking for a WiFi network in Goldendale, I noticed a horrible grinding noise on my left wheel when I applied the brakes at very low speeds. I also happened by this neat house .

It was for sale.

Although she had reduced the number of cats from 35 to 15, they were not neutered. The smell was so bad I had to immediately leave for Coeur d'Alene, ID. I slept at a Subway in Umatillia, OR (WA-14 E 98.7 mi, 1 hour 55 mins).

The clerk at the Subway where I slept convinced me to avoid points north "a lot of nuthin, winery, a lot of nuthin, desert, military base, a lot of nuthin," so the next morning on 5/23/10 I drove highway 12 through Walla Walla and Pomeroy to Clarkson and Lewiston in order to drive the "scenic highway," 95 north to Coeur d'Alene. I saw nothing but hills of wheat until I approached Lake Coeur d'Alene.

Since I could only advance my two-day WorldMark Arrow Point reservation one day, I had time to kill, so I stayed on 95 to Coeur d'Alene rather than take 3 into Harrison and Arrow Point.
