The Voyager spacecraft left Earth in 1977, and flew by Neptune/Pluto in 1989 on its way beyond the Solar System. In "Star Trek, the (original) Movie," the probe is eventually is drawn through a black hole to a planet of robots, who build a massive, intelligent ship so Voyager can complete its mission.

In the center of the ship is VOYAGER
  
In route to the black hole, the "OYA" became unreadable, so the ship knows itself as V'GER.  V'GER is sent back to Earth seeking the final part of its program from its creator.  If it does not receive the code, it will destroy Earth.

Commander Decker became the Science Officer when Admiral Kirk commandeered his ship to deal with the threat.

  

Decker had previously visited Ilia's planet, where their women are forever chaste, but nonetheless developed a strong attraction for Ilia.

   

The unrequited love and sexual tension between the two is palpable throughout the movie.

V'GER takes control of Ilia, who becomes a communication intermediary.



Spock determines that V'GER must evolve.  Decker keys-in the final program sequence, so V'GER can "meet its creator." Staring at Ilia, he stands next to V'GER, where he becomes enveloped in a swirling energy flow that strips him of his clothing.



Ilia steps into the energy flow with Decker.

 

The two merge,



and become something more.

This scene brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it.
