Bill Holmes - Activities - Hiking and Biking - West Yellowstone to Bear Lake

After spending the night in the parking lot of the WorldMark West Yellowstone facility, I arose on 5/31/10, and headed south on 20 to Ashton, ID for gas and on to Alta, WY (98.7 mi – about 2 hours 1 min).

I stopped at Henrys Lake. (Displays locally, but not on the Web. Don't know why).

While taking this photograph, I heard a banging behind me. When I turned, I saw no one, but repeatedly heard the noise. When I finished the panorama, I investigated. It was a woodpecker using the metal sign as an amplifier to attract mates or warn males away.

I asked in Ashton if there was any sight I should not miss, and was told to see the waterfalls on the way to Driggs.

I asked in Driggs if I missed the waterfall. They said it was northeast of Ashton on 47. That was too much backtracking, so I ventured east to Alta.

I then left for a cheese factor in Afton, WY (94.9 mi – about 1 hour 56 mins).

I stopped in Montpeliler (2,700 people) for food on the way to St. Charles (65.1 mi – about 1 hour 11 mins), because it was the biggest town within 30 miles of Bear Lake.

At St. Charles, I noticed the road to Minnetonka Cave looking west.

After the cave tour I returned to St. Charles, ID, and drove to Garden City, UT (12.1 mi – about 15 mins) and the World Mark facility at Bear Lake.

(On various places along the way, I lost three wheel covers. I heard one fly off while going through construction between Norris and Madison. Two may have been stolen in the WorldMark West Yellowstone parking lot or lost along the way. I bought a set in Las Vegas for $17. I was reimbursed for one of the set of four aftermarket wheel covers in Lancaster for $15.)
